Tips for Troubleshooting Model Trains That Don’t Run

Model trains are a fun pastime, but new hobbyists (and even veterans) occasionally encounter problems with their trains. One common issue you may encounter is a train that won’t run when the power is switched on. Follow these tips for troubleshooting model trains that don’t run, and you’ll be back on track before you know it.

Is It Just One Train?

When troubleshooting, it’s always best to start with the simplest possible explanation and work from there to more complex problems. If you have a train that won’t run, try another to see if the problem is widespread or not. If it’s just one train, the first thing to do is clean the train’s wheels and the track to see if the problem is simply jammed dirt and dust.

Testing Track Placement

If you’re still having issues, make sure your locomotive rests properly on the tracks. Uneven wheel gauge and balancing issues can prevent an engine from getting the contact it needs with the track to run. Move the model back and forth on the track and see if it will roll freely or not.

Power Supply Issues

If your train still won’t run, there may be a problem in the power connectivity or the motor. Check to make sure the train lights up and produces sound. If it does, then the train is getting power, but something might be wrong with the motor.

If the lights and sounds are not working, then an insufficient power supply is your issue. Re-check all the wiring, make sure it’s free of dust and grime, and use a multimeter to see if the power is working correctly.
