    Micro-Trains Line 04900641 - 40' Double-Sheathed Wood Reefer Decker 2879 - N Scale

This is a really nice model of a classic wood sheathed reefer from the steam era of railroading when humans loaded the car with ice blocks from the ice doors atop the corners of the roof so that perishable foods in the car wouldn't spoil. Billboard lettering was the norm, and this car is a nice example of that. The prototype of this car was Built 10-25, New 12-30. The printing and colors of the car are very sharp! Each printed line on the car is readable either without, or with magnification of the finest printed lines. The ice hatch doors are operable and adjustable, and latches for them are included to be installed by the modeler. The stirrups and the brake wheel on the B end of the car are very finely detailed. The car rolls smoothly, and the couplers perform excellently as well. One of my grandfathers was a foreman at Jacob E. Decker & Sons for thirty years and he certainly saw a lot of these cars! This is the second of this particular Decker 2800 numbered series of this billboard style painted reefer. The first was produced by Micro-Trains in 2013. I have both cars and the paint jobs on both cars is identical except my twelve-year-old car is almost imperceptively lighter. Modelers of this era would enjoy seeing this car on their pike. The car easily rates Five Stars and so does MMR for their selection, price, and customer service.
