Better choice for newer Kato locos than the...
I have found that the DN163K1C decoders don't reach the motor contacts on newer Kato locos (specifically the SD70Ace UP heritage). The D decoder doesn't have the copper contacts on it. Simply removing the contacts from the light board and snapping them on the D decoder works perfectly. One thing to watch for: if you find the decoder not working, most likely it is due to poor contact between the decoder contact pads in the front and the frame. I found that cutting out a small piece of double-sided foam tape (don't remove the covering from one side) and sticking it to the frame under where the front of the decoder sits serves to apply some additional pressure to the decoder contact pads and the frame and solves the problem. Other than that - these decoders are bullet-proof and work well.
