    Why not make it easier...

Posted by Randy Clark on 30th Sep 2025

I purchased 2 of the Atlas Signal Starter Sets 2 just in case there was an issue with one or the other. That was a great decision as one of the connecting cables was defective. Midwest promptly replaced the unit, and I am ready to go again. A major drawback is activation of the signal head requires additional equipment, which you must locate and install on your own. Manual switch, auxiliary contacts from a switch machine, etc. Why not offer or supply an Atlas product that will signal the control board when the train is present without extensive block detection? Other manufacturers that make track and animated track products offer their own sensors under or in the track to automatically activate the signals changing state. Fortunately, in my case I understand the electrical logic but many won't. If Atlas really wants this type of accessories to become common, they could provide a sensor that "sees" the train enter pass the signal and change the state on the signal head. They are 90% there but Atlas could offer a turnkey signal ready to operate. DCC is so simple to wire for normal train operation, why not make the signal system equally as simple to use for the average modeler.

    Atlas Signal Starter...

I hooked this up to an Atlas Selector for now, will later do block wiring. Not the easiest thing to setup, thank goodness I had enough extra wire!
