Pre-Order FAQ

Most manufacturers give an ETA on when they expect to release the pre-order which can be seen near the "add to cart" button on the product page. They also give an order due date (found in the product description) which is indicative of when the product is expected to go into production.

There is a 5% NON-refundable deposit for preorders, this amount will be deducted from the price of the product when it arrives. You will see how much downpayment is required after adding the item to your cart. We do not store your payment information and it is not charged by us when the product arrives.

For any pre-order submitted after the due date, we will try our best to fulfill your pre-order, but are at the mercy of the manufacturer and if they produce more than were preordered by their dealers. If we cannot fulfill your pre-order we will credit the 5% deposit to you.

When the pre-ordered product(s) are available to ship, you will receive an email requesting the remaining 95% payment that will take you to your cart. It is at this point you are asked for shipping address and method OR in-store pickup.. We will never charge your payment method without you checking out. At this time you are also able to add other in-stock items if you wish.

Please note that Estimated Arrival Dates can change at any point. Midwest Model Railroad is not responsible for manufacturers delaying production. Visit midwestmodelrr.com/pre-orders/ for more information.

Broadway Limited Imports proudly presents an all-new Brass-Hybrid Santa Fe 2900 Class Northern, one of the most powerful and iconic steam locomotives ever built. Long requested by serious steam modelers, this masterpiece returns in 2027 with an unprecedented level of road-specific and era-specific accuracy.

This first production run offers multiple historically accurate versions, allowing you to select the exact locomotive and era you want to model—including No. 2926 in its current operating configuration, as well as As-Delivered, Post-1947, and dual-beam headlight variations. Each version reflects carefully researched prototype details unique to that locomotive at that point in time.

Brass-Hybrid Construction — Power Meets Precision

Each Santa Fe 2900 is a true showpiece, featuring:

  • Hand-crafted brass boiler and tender

  • Heavy die-cast chassis for outstanding pulling power

  • Exceptional weight, balance, and tractive effort
The result is a locomotive that not only looks massive and authoritative—but performs like it should.

Electronics Options

Choose the configuration that fits your layout:

  • Paragon4 Sound DC/DCC with Smoke
Includes authentic sound recordings captured directly from Santa Fe No. 2926, synchronized smoke effects, and advanced motor control.

  • Stealth Series
Factory-installed speaker and 21-pin DCC interface, ready for easy decoder installation.

Why This Model Matters

The Santa Fe 2900 Class represents the absolute peak of American steam locomotive development. These engines were built without compromise—designed to move fast, heavy passenger trains across long western mainlines. For modelers, the 2900 is more than a locomotive; it’s a statement piece that defines an era.

This release combines museum-grade detail with real operating authority, making it equally at home on a display shelf or leading premier passenger trains on a large layout.

About the Prototype

Few steam locomotives match the sheer size, power, and presence of the Santa Fe 2900 Class. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1943 and 1944 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, these 4-8-4 “Northern” locomotives were the largest and most powerful passenger steam engines ever rostered by Santa Fe—and among the most formidable steam locomotives built anywhere.

Today, six examples of the 2900 Class survive. Five are preserved for static display, while No. 2926 was fully restored and returned to service in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2021. Now operating on the mainline once again, it holds the distinction of being the largest operating 4-8-4 steam locomotive in the world.
