Popular Train Engine Prototypes

Popular Train Engine Prototypes

A model rail yard can house some amazing scenes and designs, but you must know where to start. If you’re uncertain what you should put in your rail yard, here are a few popular train engine prototypes you can get to make your whole design come together. While these engines aren’t mandatory, they’re very popular and worth checking out.

Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) Light Pacific 4-6-2

The Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) road no longer operates as it once did, as it eventually joined the Union Pacific Railroad. However, the road went from Denver to Salt Lake City in Utah, helping transfer passengers in WW1 on the Light Pacific 4-6-2. This is one of the iconic locomotives from the era, and only a few copies and originals still exist.

Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) EMD SD70

The ATSF is another line that doesn’t exist as its own railroad anymore, but it was one of the largest in the country. That is, until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern Railroad. The EMD SD70 is one of the modern trains that still sees use today, which is why it’s a great option for those who want good modern Atlas N scale locomotives. The full train is part of a series of diesel-electric locomotives.

Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range (DM&IR) USRA Light Mikado

This railway operated until 2011, when it merged with Wisconsin Central LTD. This railroad went through northern Minnesota and Wisconsin to the Great Lakes and the ports on the lakes. The USRA Light Mikado is another WWI-era locomotive using steam to operate. At the time, these were modern and good designs that were quite popular, with over 50 railroads using their models.

While these are some of the best and most popular train engine prototypes to get for your model rail yard, you should get what you really want. These models will look great but so will many other options out there. But you can use this as a great starting location to pick out what you want in your rail yard.
