Since its debut in July 1992, the 787 series has been active on various limited express services such as Tsubame, Ariake, and Relay Tsubame. Currently based at Minami-Fukuoka and Ōita depots, the 6-, 7-, and 8-car formations operate on Kirameki, Kaiō, Kasasagi, Relay Kamome, and Nichirin, while 4-car sets mainly serve Nichirin, Hyūga, and Kirishima. It remains a key train on conventional limited express routes.
The model replicates the blue-gray underfloor equipment seen on the actual train and includes destination display stickers featuring new services like Relay Kamome and Kasasagi, introduced after the 2023 launch of the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen.
