    Kato Unitram street track...

Posted by Richard Berger on 21st Jan 2025

If you’re interested in streetcar operations in a city, Unitram street track from Kato is an excellent solution. Originally released as only a simple oval of track, the line expanded considerably with the addition of a 90 degree crossing and turnouts, supporting layout designs with complex track work including junctions. While expensive, the Unitram turnouts function flawlessly using either DC or DCC. The turnout switches both tracks simultaneously and they include the uniquely prototypical feature of spring-loaded points, which allow a streetcar to go through the turnout while it is set for the other route. Kato has stated that this turnout is the most complex and sophisticated item in the Unitrack product line, likely explaining its high price. This is my 2nd order of them and it’s the first time in 5 years they have been readily available. If in-street rail trackage is of interest to you, this is an excellent product.
