Description

The freight house was built sometime in 1871 and was the focal point of all the freight traffic in and out of the small village of Wolfeboro. However, over the years, progress in the form of the automobile and buses caused service on the Wolfeboro short line to slowly decline. In the fall of 1935, the Boston and Maine, who now owned the Eastern, petitioned the I.C.C. for permission to discontinue passenger service altogether. Many of the local businessmen fought to keep the line running, but by the spring of 1936, the Boston and Maine got their wish. On May 16th the 3:05 PM outbound train became the last scheduled passenger run on the Wolfeboro Branch. Operations at the Wolfeboro freight house continued on a once-a-day basis and eventually declined to freight deliveries once every three weeks. In the late 1960’s, freight service was reduced to sporadic at best, with only a handful of trips a month.
