Brand new to Oxford’s American Classic series is the exciting introduction from the Henry Ford stable of post-war motoring extravaganza – the Ford Fairlane. This era of American cars saw the results of many new advances in technology and the introduction of features never seen before from simple things like automatic windows to longer wheelbases and more powerful engines. The Ford Fairlane was made between 1955 and 1970 during which it came in a variety of body styles including two-door and four-door saloons, similar hardtops, station wagons and convertibles. A basic level trim version proved popular for fleet use too by taxi fleets and the Police.
Oxford’s Ford Fairlane 500 is based on the 3rd generation of the car manufactured and restyled between 1960 and 1961 and represents the four-door town sedan version of that period - the flagship of the full-size model range. The car featured a body-on-frame chassis with a 119 in wheelbase, 3.7L engine and either two or three speed transmission. Physically, the Fords of the early 1960s era came with a sleeker look than their 1950s extravagant appearance. The twin headlights sat in a scalloped square front grille. Round taillights were replaced by half moon shaped lights for 1960 only. The tailfins were smaller, windscreen wipers were extended to a wider scope and Ford introduced the centre rear fuel door lid.
Incorporating all the above physical features, our new 1:87 scale replica of the Ford Fairlane Sedan 500 Town appears in a sporty bright red with contrasting white roof. White is also carried through to the whitewall tyres and white interior seating. The dashboard, steering wheel and remaining interior are moulded in red. Exterior trim is primarily chrome, including the Ford lettering on the front of the bonnet and Fairlane across the rear. The Fairlane 500 nomenclature is printed on the rear wings in silver. Our model is registered in Oregon in 1960 as 1X 1028.
