Gonna a mountain - gonna build it high!

Posted by Scott Ogle on 23rd Mar 2022

I’m in the process of building an entire mountain range out of Woodland Scenics Shaper Sheet, covered with Shaper Sheet Plaster. After using more than 20 half-gallon containers of plaster and an equal number of sheets, I’ve found both to be great products! Shaper Sheet Plaster offers 20 full minutes of working time, which is just about what you need to use an 8oz batch. When it dries, it provides a hard bullet-proof surface ready for coloring and drilling holes for trees. I’ve found the key to success is precise measurements of the plaster/water mix. “Winging it” can create a batch either too stiff or too watery when applied to the Shaper Sheet. Even small changes in measurements alter the characteristics of the blend. I start with 1 cup of plaster & 1/2 cup of water, then either use that 2:1 blend straight or add up to 1/8 cup of additional plaster, which is still slightly weaker than package directions. Precise measurements mean I can alter the blend as needed: Stiffer to fill in undesired wrinkles in the Shaper Sheet or Weaker to create a slurry that will conform exactly to the underlying surface. While it isn’t critical to understand the exo-thermic chemical reaction that activates plaster, remember you aren’t baking a cake. The water doesn’t actually blend with the plaster, but suspends the now activated stuff. When its 20 minute limit is over, it doesn’t matter what you do, the plaster will become stiff and unworkable. Unless you want to make a substantial contribution to your plumber’s retirement fund, don’t even think about cleaning up Shaper Sheet plaster in a sink! I dunk my mixing tub and tools in a bucket of water immediately after I finish a batch and clean them off with my hands. Since the plaster doesn’t mix with the water, it settles to the bottom of the bucket, leaving the water clean enough for the next batch. When this project is done, the entire bucket will be sacrificed to the train gods.
