PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

The 3-bay Center Flow covered hopper first entered service in the mid-1960s, built by American Car and Foundry. The cars handle loads such as grain, corn and similar bulk commodities. The Center Flow design relies on the car’s rounded body to provide structural strength - eliminating the traditional center sill, and making gravity unloading easier.

Our 3-bay car represents the common 4600 cu.ft. capacity version. The railroads looking to replace their aging 40’ box cars in grain service needed a modern hopper design - one that could operate within the tighter Plate B clearances for light branchline and industrial service. ACF’s design won them many contracts from a plethora of railroads. One can find these cars still in revenue service today in grain trains and other similar service.

Athearn Genesis 1554 - ACF 4600 Covered Hopper St. Mary's West (SMW) 815345 Primed For Grime - N Scale

This Athearn Genesis "Primed for Grime" hopper, one of three in this latest Athearn production release, originally painted for The Rock, now lettered for SMW, is as good as it gets in N-scale! It's perfection in every way if you model The Rock or freight of our contemporary era. The molded and applied details are incredibly fine, as it the flawless paint job! I love the rusted etched metal roof walkway! It's much better than a solid blue or a bright shiny silver! Since it's primed for grime, feel free to weather it even more to your liking! Did I mention the car rolls incredibly smoothly and the coupling action is great too? It's an absolute beauty and easily rates Ten Stars out of Five!
