Top 5 Must-Have Tools for Model Railroading

As you get more involved in model railroading, you may need to start investing in some special tools. These tools allow you to build layouts and perform maintenance on your trains more easily and efficiently. Keep reading to learn about the top five must-have tools for model railroading.

1. Standards Gauge

A standards gauge is a piece of metal that you can use to measure things like points, wheels, and coupler heights. Each standards gauge is set to a specific model train scale, so you’ll need to get the one that matches the scale you’re using.

2. Voltage Tester

A voltage tester is vital for diagnosing track wiring problems. If your train is moving slower than expected, a voltage tester can quickly tell you if the problem lies in the wiring or if there is a simpler fix. Specialized voltage testers for model trains are inexpensive compared to those used on vehicles and other machinery.

3. Digital Level

Slightly more expensive, a digital level is a must-have tool for model railroading. Once you start adding inclines and declines to your layout, you’ll need to know precisely what angles are too steep for your train. Every scale needs a different incline grade to avoid derailing.

4. Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is one tool you’ll need to pick up once you start building your own layouts. This simple tool helps you create joins between electrical wires, which is critical to setting up special effects and more complex track operations, including:

  • Track lights
  • Crossing gates
  • Fire and smoke effects
  • Building interior lighting

5. Hot Wire Cutter

One of the easiest ways to build cool landscapes for your model trains is to use XPS insulation foam. It’s a type of foam sold at hardware stores that usually comes in one-inch-thick sheets. You can glue these sheets together to build height, then carve them into whatever shapes you want with a hot wire cutter. Hot wire cutters can be handheld or stationary, but you’ll probably want a handheld one for model railroading.

You can find all the model railroad supplies you need at Midwest Model Railroad. We carry a huge variety of locomotives, rolling stock, scenery kits, track pieces, and special effects to help turn your dream layout into a reality. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask us!
