Nice detail kit for modern grain...
My small switching layout consists almost exclusively of a corn ethanol plant and a corn syrup processing plant, so I am always looking for more variety in the rolling stock I can plausibly operate on it; these bethgon coal conversion kits add another interesting operation to the layout. The frames mount very easily to a variety of manufacturers coalporter, no problem at all there. The tarp across the top consists of a self adhesive sticker. MACRails directions say to supplement this with glue stick, although to me the glue stick would override any effectiveness of the self adhesion. The greatest challenge is getting the sides to wrap around, and stay wrapped around, on the long sides of the cars. On some models I reported to trimming the sticks more narrow to completely avoid this wraparound,but still cover the width of the frame sides, and this was generally successful. On a couple, I was able to simply apply the sticker as provided, particularly the short covers. To weather them, I highlighted the ribs a bit with a gray or gray-green marker, dullcoated the tarp, then weathered with chalks and dullcoted once more. I had to touch up some edges of the tarp where it wanted to lift following dull coating, but overall the dull coat did give the covers more of a tarpped appearane. Overall I’m happy with the product, and really just happy it’s available for purchase, even if it means a little bit of experimentation. That is part of the fun of the hobby, and I am really glad to have this type of car operating on my layout now.
