Space saving and elegant
When I started my layout, I kind of thought using curved turnouts was cheating. But as I wrap up construction many years later, I’ve embraced the essential truth that full size railroads don’t have a basement’s space constraints. I’ve found curved turnouts are extremely useful to save a bit of space while softening the look of your track work. I have something like twenty Peco #7 turnouts installed and think they are close to perfect. Lest you think full sized railroads don’t use curved turnouts, just open a historic railroad book and start examining the pictures. You’ll find they’re quite common in tight yards and wherever else space doesn’t allow a straight switch.

The space-saver
Although I don’t like the way curved turnouts look, once again I find myself using them on my latest railroad expansion. The reason is simple - when the geographic boundaries of a railroad are constrained by basement walls, these enable you to fit track configurations you couldn’t do with straight turnouts. (and I call BS on anyone who says they aren’t prototypical. Many real world examples of curved turnouts can be found in books and videos if you look) After a false start using Micro-Engineering track and turnouts on my layout, then realizing I hated everything about them, I turned to Peco and never looked back. Peco’s track products are superior in every way, especially their insulfrog and unifrog turnouts. I only wish they made curved turnouts with different radius.
