The prototype UP Bicentennial PS4750 was a special paint job applied by Pullman-Standard to a run of the mill Pullman-Standard PS-2CD 4750 in 1974. The car, wearing road number 74444, was painted in a US-flag-like scheme that included red and white stripes and a blue band at the top. The car was put on display in several public forums in the 1974-1976 period.
UP 74444 was placed into revenue service after that. It lasted in revenue service into the 1980s!
This Tangent model is precise. It is a high-detail replica of the UP prototype hopper, with all of the unique details of this 1974 production car, including UP-specific appliances such as Landreth roof hatches and the flanges installed above the outlet gates. These are details not found on the model of this car that you may already have in your collection. This June 2026 release is sure to be a hot seller, so don’t miss out. When they are gone, they are… gone!
And in case you are unfamiliar with this prototype model, the Pullman-Standard PS-2CD 4750 covered hopper was the largest production covered hopper design in history, and is therefore statistically important to virtually any modeler from the 1970s to the present. Tangent Scale Models continues the evolution of our “phased approach” PS4750 models, not “one-size fits all” models.
Here are a few more details about our UP prototype, from our June 2026 production.
– Union Pacific (UP) “Bicentennial CH-100-28 1974” gives the patient Union Pacific modelers some love. Many of you have asked for us “to do the UP Bicentennial car” so – here it is! Union Pacific rostered eight groups of Pullman 4750s, and the Bicentennial car was one of the cars in the 1000-car order for lot CH-100-28. The Bicentennial car was produced when Pullman was transitioning from the combination closed-hole/open-hole side posts to only open side posts – a transition that occurred in this order of 1000 cars. The cars also include three distinctive appliances that make these Tangent models stand out from generic models: UP-specific corner steps – with the distinctive angle, bolted outlet gate flanges, and Landreth style roof hatches, with their distinctive zig-zag rib pattern. Check out those see-through Morton roof walkways and matching end crossover platforms. The models come equipped with body-mounted brake hardware and our 100-ton Barber S-2 trucks with rotating caps. Tangent’s execution of this gorgeous UP paint job is simply unmatched, created with care and accuracy down to the stencil marks are one-inch COTS panel lettering. Check out the beautiful paint separations in between the blue bar, the red and white stripes, the black underframe, and the white ends. We are pleased to offer this accurate UP model, unlike any other PS4750 we’ve produced to date!
