Description
The Series KIHA181 is a JNR-era diesel multiple unit built for limited express service and later operated by JR West on non-electrified routes. JR West KIHA181 vehicles served a wide range of services including Kunibiki, Oki, Inaba, Isokaze, Hakuto, Hamakaze and Asashio, linking Sanin with Kyushu and Kansai.
- Era and prototype: Modeled on vehicles assigned to Kyoto Depot circa 1996.

- Enlarged-window end gangway doors and sealed emergency doors as seen after JR transition.
- Some side windows reduced in size due to the addition of conductor compartments.
- Tablet catcher removed and train radio antenna fitted.
- ATS-P piping on the roof faithfully modeled.
- Front limited express emblem reproduced in silver.
- Authentic JNR limited express livery with JR logo applied.
- Black rubber window seals on all cars.
- Mechanical and lighting features:
- Slotless motor for smooth, quiet operation.
- Head and tail lights plus train name plate lighting with on/off switch, using white LEDs.
- Both leading and intermediate cars come standard with body-mounted KATO telescopic-style close automatic couplers.
- Electrical coupler included for KIHA181 front end.
- Included markings and accessories:
- Front headmark preinstalled as Hakuto.
- Exchangeable front headmarks included to recreate Inaba, Hamakaze, Asashio and a blank headmark.
- Stickers included for side destination indicators and train labels to reproduce each service.
